MBDA has signed an agreement for the European Hypersonic Defense Interceptor Study (HYDIS2) project concept phase with the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR).

The agreement was signed on behalf of the project partners and funding nations France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.

A total of 19 partners and more than 20 subcontractors in 14 European countries are part of the project, with MBDA as the coordinator.

The project seeks to develop an endo-atmospheric hypersonic and ballistic missile interceptor by 2035.

Three-Year Concept Phase

The three-year concept phase intends to pick the “most suitable and effective counter-hypersonic and anti-ballistic concept of interceptor for European nations’ needs, with the associated weapon architecture,” MBDA explained.

It includes defining the “operational scenarios and weapon systems interface” and “building a joint definition of each threat based on the knowledge and expertise of all the partners involved.”

Additionally, technologies enabling the concept’s implementation will be matured and an industrial network will be created to develop the future counter-hypersonic missile systems.
