The drama continues with the Philadelphia 76ers, though this time, it’s Joel Embiid who has raised eyebrows.
It’s been a newsworthy few days for the team following the ongoing tension between the team’s president of basketball operations, Daryl Morey, and guard James Harden.
This comes after ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Saturday that Philadelphia was ending trade talks and planned on bringing the guard back into the fold for training camp.
That didn’t sit well with Harden, who in a video posted on Monday by The Athletic’s Shams Carania, called Morey a “liar” and said he would never be part of an organization he is part of.
Embiid and his social media moves
Now, Embiid has added to the drama with his latest maneuvers on social media.
WIP in Philadelphia posted a story stating that Embiid had “removed some things from his Twitter bio like ‘processing…’ and the location of Philadelphia.”
The 29-year-old is the reigning MVP and has been a key figure for the 76ers as they’ve gone from a rebuild to title contenders.
Harden-76ers tension
The team had hoped that Harden would be a key part of their push for the title when they acquired him from the Brooklyn Nets in February 2022.
However, Harden has made it clear, according to Wojnarowski, that he isn’t happy with Morey over the fact he hasn’t been offered a long-term max contract.
This comes after Harden took a $15 million pay cut in July 2022 and declined his $47.4 million player option in order to sign a $33 million deal for the 2022/23 season.
However rumors of a rift began to swirl when Harden picked up the player option in the contract for the upcoming season and stated he wanted to be traded, with the Los Angeles Clippers said to be his preferred landing spot.
The Athletic reports Harden has no intention of playing for the Sixers, and won’t take part in training camp.
Where this leaves Embiid, who signed a four-year super-max worth $196 million contract back in September, remains to be seen.
