It has always been thought that Deion Sanders would eventually progress to coaching in the NFL.
His work at youth level has been nothing short of sensational, and when he finally moved to take charge of the Colorado Buffaloes, it seemed like he was preparing a run to the NFL.
Coaching football has not always been a clear career path for ‘Primetime’ and he only took charge of the Jackson State Tigers football program to improve the fortunes and perception of HBCU colleges.
Historically Black colleges or universities (HBCU) were not treated with the same respect or allure as the bigger name football programs across the United States, yet Sanders set out to change that.
He was wildly successful and managed to recruit some of the nation’s top footballing talents to his program in Jackson State.
It was a fairytale story, but it showed that Sanders was not just using this as a first step on the coaching ladder, which he has now confirmed when asked about the possibility of eventually coaching the Dallas Cowboys.
“I don’t have any desire or ambition to coach in the NFL,” Sanders told Cowboys Country.
“I am cut a little different. I love Jerry Jones, I tremendously love that whole family.
“I have a problem with men getting their checks and not doing their jobs. I would be too tough as a coach in the NFL because I still have those old-school attributes.
Mike McCarthy’s job in Dallas is safe
Despite the nature of the conversation, Jerry Jones is rather content with Mike McCarthy continuing as head coach of the Cowboys for the 2023 season.
They have reached the playoffs in the last two years, holding one of the best records in the regular season.
Disappointing post-season displays have seemed to edge McCarthy towards the exit door on two occasions, but Jones has stuck by his appointment and continues to do so.
