Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard was on Instagram Live Friday night listening to Will Smith‘s “Miami” song. His agent, Aaron Goodwin, later told The Athletic that the situation was “just a coincidence.”
Lillard, 32, is currently on a “working vacation” in Paris taking some time to ponder what his future will look like, reportedly the first time he’s really questioning if Portland is the right choice.
He has been linked to a Miami Heat trade, especially now that Portland drafted Scoot Henderson, so fans were quick to assume the song was a cryptic message to reveal his decision. Lillard’s agent, however, set the record straight.
“The music was just a coincidence,” Goodwin said. “Damian’s not disrespectful. He’s not an instigator, so he’s not going to do anything out of character. There would be no reason for him to do that. That’s why he laughed [in the video]. It’s a funny coincidence that a DJ would put that on.”
Lillard did in fact chuckle at user comments pointing out the song, which was likely the DJ’s way of poking fun at the Trail Blazers.
Can the Heat land Damian Lillard?
Miami did not aggressively pursue Bradley Beal because they want to think bigger, which many believe is clearly Lillard.
The Heat are in dire need of a point guard to push them to the next level. Losing two finals in a span of four years is not fun.
Lillard is also reaching a point of no return if he doesn’t attempt to go all in on an NBA championship.
His relationship with the Trail Blazers might have to take a backseat for him to cement a legacy amongst the greats.
