Zimbabwe has announced plans to develop a state-of-the-art data center and industrial technology park, marking a significant milestone in its digital transformation agenda. The initiative was disclosed by Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, following engagements with Econet Wireless CEO Roy Chimanikire.
The proposed location aims to blend power, connectivity, and logistics to attract manufacturing and export-focused businesses and will incorporate a 300-hectare industrial park powered by a 100-megawatt solar energy plant equipped with advanced data infrastructure.
The upcoming data center will include enhanced power generation capacity to meet the demands of energy-intensive computing and accelerate the country’s adoption of artificial intelligence (AI).
Douglas Mboweni, Econet Group Chief Executive Officer, said:
Our vision is to create the infrastructure, such as power and water facilities, needed for a modern industrial park. This will make it easier for investors to come in, take advantage of the location, and create jobs.
Zimbabwe is also preparing to launch its national AI strategy this month, which aims to modernize high-value sectors such as banking, finance, and industrial manufacturing.
Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, said:
If successful, the project could position Zimbabwe as a key player in the regional digital economy.
To complement the effort, the government has introduced measures to lower the cost of doing business, improving accessibility and affordability of data and voice services for enterprises and consumers.
The move underscores the country’s broader ambition to harness digital infrastructure for competitiveness, innovation, and deeper integration within the regional digital landscape.
