Yusuff Aina’s recent exhibition at Retroafrica in collaboration with Art Twenty One is a true spectacle. Color for so many reasons influences how we feel, how we think, and how we engage and interact with the world. The use of color is specifically important to artists to evoke different emotions in their audiences.

In his recent exhibition, the Nigerian Born Yusuff Aina explores how color psychology influences mental health. Titled: “Eniyan: Escape Room” represents an immersive exhibition that delves into the intricate voyage of Yusuff’s artistic practice, encapsulating the depths of his emotional exploration and the potent influence of self-discovery. This immersive exhibition includes installations, paintings, and sculptures that address mental health and how it influences decisions.

In his statement, he writes ‘I am thrilled to showcase my studies, curiosities, and personal growth, as well as my dedication to raising awareness about mental health in society. It is imperative that we address this topic, which often goes unspoken, and understand how decision-making and choices profoundly impact us and our world.’– Yusuff.

He has been honing his craft and experimenting with various mediums. His work includes sculptures and installations, featured at the exhibition. Aina employs cartoon-like figures, motifs, and landscapes infused with fantastical elements to tell stories in his artwork. These patterns, known as ‘ainasm,’ symbolize resilience. They also symbolize the oneness of humanity through the recurring character, ‘Eniyan.’ Aina’s last name ‘Àina, inspired the term ‘ainasm,’ while ‘Eniyan’ translates to ‘human being’ in Yorùbá tradition.

The exhibition showcases four rooms, each adorned in colors representing different states of mind and emotions. The blue, yellow, white, and red rooms serve as visual metaphors, allowing visitors to connect with their unique emotional landscapes. Yusuff sheds light on the significance of adversity and transformative potential in arduous experiences. He believes profound growth emerges when confronted with challenges.

It reflects the innate human yearning for freedom from limitations and personal doubts. Through its symbolic representation of escape, viewers are inspired to confront obstacles and embark on their unique journeys of self-discovery.

The exhibition is an invitation to embrace vulnerability, engage with our emotions, and navigate the complexities of the human experience. It becomes a space for personal connection, empathy, and understanding. “Eniyan: Escape Room” offers a profound opportunity to connect with ourselves and one another, fostering unity and growth. It encapsulates the depths of his emotional exploration and the influence of self-discovery. This exhibition invites spectators to navigate vulnerability, resilience, and the pursuit of personal growth.

The exhibition is on until September at Art Twenty One in collaboration with Retro Africa Gallery.
