The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that it will close its Johannesburg office, which oversees operations in southern Africa, and merge its southern and eastern operations into a single regional hub in Nairobi, Kenya. According to the organization’s spokesperson, the decision is part of a long-term structural streamlining effort that has been accelerated by declining donor funding. The move comes after US President Donald Trump’s administration terminated 90% of USAID contracts, significantly reducing humanitarian aid and impacting organizations like the WFP. While it didn’t reveal how much of its funding was affected by the cuts, reports show that the US provided about half of its funding last year. Nevertheless, the WFP has vowed to continue its vital food assistance programs for vulnerable communities.
