The appointment and assumption of command of Major General Abdulsalam Enesi Abubakar as the 15th Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) is a strategic move that could potentially turn the tide in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency in the Northeast.

With over a decade of operational, command, and instructional experience, Maj Gen Abubakar brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role. His impressive background, which includes serving as Commander Sector 3 OPHK and Multi-National Joint Task Force in Mungono, General Officer Commanding 7 Division/Commander Sector 1 OPHK Maiduguri, and General Officer Commanding 3 Division/Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, demonstrates his familiarity with the complex security landscape of the region.

During his tenure as Commander Sector 3 OPHK he led several offensive operations that resulted in the neutralization of several high-profile BokoHaram/ISWAP commanders and the recovery of arms and ammunition. His troops successfully conducted operations in the Lake Chad region, disrupting the terrorist group’s supply chains and communication networks.

As General Officer Commanding 7 Division/Commander Sector 1 OPHK Maiduguri, Maj Gen Abubakar oversaw operations that led to the liberation of several key towns and villages from insurgent control. His troops conducted successful operations in Maiduguri and surrounding areas, improving security and allowing for the return of displaced persons.

Under his leadership, Sector 1 Operation HADIN KAI made significant gains against Boko Haram, pushing the terrorist group on the defensive. As GOC 3 Division and Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, Maj Gen Abubakar implemented a comprehensive approach to counter-insurgency, combining kinetic and non-kinetic efforts.

His troops conducted successful operations against Bandits and other criminal elements in the region, while also engaging with local communities and implementing development projects. It is worthy to note that General Abubakar in his previous commands believe in Community engagement programs as he engaged with local leaders, women, and youth, listening to their concerns and addressing their needs.

He also offered humanitarian assistance as his troops provided humanitarian aid to affected communities, including food, shelter, and medical care. Additionally, he also has track records in Infrastructure development, he oversaw the construction and rehabilitation of critical infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and schools. These efforts showcased his commitment to winning hearts and minds, improving lives, and fostering stability in affected areas.

His acquired field experiences have honed his skills in tactical operations, strategic planning, and leadership, making him well-equipped to tackle the challenges of counter-insurgency in the Northeast region of Nigeria. Moreover, his tenure as Deputy Commandant/Director of Studies at the National Defence College, Abuja, showcases his ability to mentor and train future military leaders, which could be invaluable in building capacity and enhancing the effectiveness of troops under his command.

Given his extensive experience and proven track record, Maj Gen Abubakar’s appointment is a welcome development in the fight against insurgency in Nigeria’s Northeast. His leadership would bring a new level of strategic thinking and operational effectiveness to Operation HADIN KAI, ultimately contributing to the restoration of peace and stability in the region. With Maj Gen Abubakar at the helm, Nigerians can be hopeful that the military will make significant strides in defeating terrorism and rebuilding the lives of those affected by the conflict.
