A series of earthquakes in Ethiopia’s Afar region has sparked concerns over potential volcanic eruptions, displacing thousands. This geologically active zone sits within the Great Rift Valley, a fault line formed millions of years ago that is gradually pulling apart the African continent. Scientists warn that the movement of molten rock beneath the Earth’s crust is driving the tremors, with over 200 quakes recorded in the past five months, the strongest reaching magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale. While no eruption has occurred yet, experts predict three possible outcomes: rock solidification, lateral magma movement, or a volcanic eruption. To mitigate risks, scientists stress the need for advanced monitoring systems and better communication strategies for affected communities.
