Whisky is for Everyone, Says Kenya’s Rockstar Bartender Angeliqua Rivera
Angeliqua Rivera has quietly transformed Nairobi’s bartending scene. Nicknamed the “Rockstar Bartender,” the Filipino mixologist has built what many thought impossible, Kenya’s first all-female bartended bar.
Her journey didn’t begin in Nairobi, or even in the world of mixology. With a nursing degree and a background in music, Angeliqua first took to the stage as a singer in Manila, then later performed across Qatar, Dubai, and Egypt.
However, while entertaining crowds, she found herself captivated by something else happening behind the bar.
“People love to drink and have fun,” she says with a smile. “And I realized nursing wasn’t for me.”

From a Two-Day Visit to a Trailblazing Career
A short trip to Nairobi was all it took to change everything. Originally invited for just two days, Angeliqua quickly fell in love with the city’s energy and weather. More importantly, she noticed the lack of women in bartending roles. That realization pushed her to stay.
Since 2016, she has worked to not only master her craft but also mentor and empower women in the hospitality industry. Through her leadership, she has opened doors for others, showing that female bartenders belong behind the bar just as much as anyone else.
Angeliqua’s love for mixology is evident, especially when she speaks about whisky. “Singleton is known as the bartender-friendly whisky,” she explains. “It’s so versatile, strong, fruit-forward, and gentle on the palate.”
Her approach is based on what she calls the “rule of three”: one part whisky, one mixer, and one fruit or flavour. According to her, “Any fruit, I guarantee, with soda or sparkling water and Singleton, you’ll never go wrong.”
Her creativity and commitment led to the creation of her award-winning cocktail, The Twelvefold Toast. Inspired by Kenyan hospitality, it blends Singleton 12-Year-Old, Lavender Cryo Blanche, Perrier Sparkling Water, and a striking gold pear garnish.
The drink is both elegant and approachable, exactly how Angeliqua defines her bartending style.
More Than Cocktails: A Movement for Change
While her drinks turn heads, her broader impact is even more powerful. Angeliqua has competed three times in the prestigious World Class Bartender Competition, and each time she has proven that expertise has no gender.
Her bar at Westgate Mall staffed entirely by women sends a bold message to the industry.
However, Angeliqua insists she doesn’t aim to exclude. “I don’t want to genderize the bar,” she explains. “You wouldn’t know if it’s a man or woman who created the drink—you’ll just enjoy it, right?”
That simple question captures the essence of her philosophy. At its core, bartending is about joy, precision, and creativity not stereotypes. Her leadership continues to inspire a new generation of young women to step behind the bar, armed with skill and confidence.
Today, Angeliqua Rivera stands as more than just a bartender. She is a mentor, a trailblazer, and a symbol of what’s possible when passion meets purpose.
In every glass she serves, and in every woman she trains, she’s changing the way Kenya, and the world thinks about bartending.
