He may be the man of the moment, but Victor Wembanyama is still learning after arriving at the San Antonio Spurs.
One of his first steps on Texas was to meet for a dinner with legends from the franchise’s history.
“I learned more in one hour of dinner than in my entire life about the NBA,” said Wembanyama.
After the whole hurricane of his No.1 draft pick, he is now a full-fledged player for the San Antonio Spurs, and the franchise decided to embrace him.
“Some general manager was giving us an arm in return,” said Brian Wright, manager of the Texan team.
Wembi landed in Texas and all hell broke loose. Posing and playing on the AT&T Center with the white jersey and his No.1 stamped.
He broke down barriers, both in physique and form, as such a player had never been seen before in the franchise.
Tim Duncan, David Robinson and Kawhi Leonard were historic stars, but nobody embraces the spotlight like the Frenchman.
“I don’t feel the pressure. I want to be the best in everything I do,” repeats the prodigy from Nanterre.
But everyone in San Antonio knows that there are guidelines to adhere to in the franchise.
That culture of decades of success, and for that the Spurs legends decided to welcome him with a dinner organized with Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Manu Ginobili and Sean Elliott.
“In a few hours they taught me everything,” the new arrival stressed.
The word ‘culture’ is repeated ad nauseam, but it’s real.
The way of working at the Spurs, with players at Popovich‘s service and victories all year long.
“It’s spectacular to feel like these people are so important to the city of San Antonio, and they’re so appreciative and so generous to the franchise, they’ve started to take care of me already,” the youngster added.
No more 60-loss seasons are worth it for the Spurs and even less for the ‘unicorn’.
“I will learn fast and I know the NBA is complex, but I want to win,” he said at the draft in Brooklyn.
The Wembanyama phenomenon is all about the spotlight and the search for success.
