The University of the West Indies (UWI) and Nigeria’s Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities have signed a three-year memorandum of understanding to deepen higher-education ties between Africa and the Caribbean.
The agreement, finalized during a visit by 23 Nigerian vice-chancellors to UWI’s Jamaica headquarters, prioritizes joint research, faculty and student exchanges, and collaborative programs in climate resilience, digital innovation, artificial intelligence, and public health. Both sides aim to co-develop sustainable financing models and boost institutional visibility in global rankings.
Professor Hilary Beckles, UWI’s vice-chancellor, framed the pact as a strategic response to shared challenges across the Global South.
Vice-Chancellors from Nigeria’s Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) Secretary General Professor Andrew Haruna called it a shift from historical affinity to actionable academic partnership.
Coordination will be led by senior officials from both organizations, with initial focus areas including agricultural innovation, cybersecurity, cultural studies, and scholarship pipelines. The renewable agreement signals growing South–South collaboration in knowledge production and talent development.
