The US and South Korea have signed a memorandum of understanding to pursue collaborations that will boost each nation’s cybersecurity.

The partnership will see the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and Seoul’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) team up on initiatives including threat information sharing and best practices in digital crisis management.

This approach will be facilitated according to the bilateral Cyber Framework signed between US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol in April.

As part of this project, the countries announced in June the establishment of a Framework Action Group focused on vital infrastructure.

This unit will consist of members from CISA, NSI, South Korean science and technology agencies, and other US departments.

‘A Great Step Forward’

The joint cyber partnership includes regular consultation on cybersecurity threat response workflows for enhanced cooperation between the US and South Korea’s computer emergency teams.

CISA and NIS will also lead efforts toward cyber infrastructure supply chain resilience, the exchange of methods across digital landscapes through training and joint exercises, and policies to leverage innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence.

“I am pleased that CISA is partnering with the Republic of Korea National Intelligence Service through this Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen our collaboration on defending against cyber threats,” CISA Director Jen Easterly said.

“International cooperation with key partners and allies is vital to building resilience in our shared cyber ecosystem. Today’s agreement represents a great step forward in our work together.”

Latest CISA Projects

CISA funded a program earlier this month that will enlist future cyber leaders from underserved communities in the US to address the need for more personnel to combat growing digital threats.

In October, the agency confirmed its partnership with Israeli counterpart INCD to counter and mitigate potential cyber assaults on Tel Aviv following the Hamas attacks.

CISA also collaborated with multiple US and Japanese federal arms in September to publish a joint advisory on an emerging hacker group linked to China that has targeted multiple organizations in North America and East Asia.
