The aggressive economic policy that headlined Donald Trump’s reelection campaign continued to come to fruition Wednesday. Indeed, US President Trump announced the implementation of 25% tariffs on the European Union (EU), according to a Financial Times report.

Less than two months into his return to the Oval Office, tariffs have become a staple of the returning administration. First, the President issued the import taxes on the likes of Mexico, Canada, and China. Then he targeted the BRCIS bloc with 150% tariffs. Now, he has turned his attention to the EU.

The return of US President Donald Trump was always going to be defined by an even more aggressive economic policy. Throughout his campaign, he championed the importance of the US dollar’s status and balancing global trade. With February not even concluded, Trump has made good on those perspectives.

Following his increased tax approach to global trade, US President Trump has announced 25% tariffs on the European Union. Specifically, he directed the taxes on the bloc because he claims it was “formed to screw the United States,” in his most recent justification.

“We have made a decision, and we’ll be announcing it very soon. It’ll be a 25%,” Trump said in a cabinet meeting Wednesday. Additionally, he noted they will be applied “generally,” though he made specific mention of car imports. The reason behind the tariff has not been extended beyond his statements but aligns with his administration’s actions thus far.

So far, his second term has been highlighted by aggressive federal downsizing at any cost and the balancing of international trade. Those two efforts have been in full force, with Elon Musk’s DOGE and tariffs becoming what has been his clear priorities early on in his return.
