The US State Department has approved a $300-million package to modernize South Korea’s KDX-II class destroyers.
Seoul requested upgraded MK 99 fire control system cabinets, Weapon Direct System software modifications, and related integration and installation services.
The package also includes personnel training and logistical support.
BAE Systems will serve as the principal supplier, supported by additional contractors selected through a competitive process.
The US State Department stated that the sale will enhance Seoul’s capacity for anti-surface and anti-air warfare missions while improving its capabilities “as a deterrent to regional threats” and “strengthen its homeland defense.”
South Korea-US Partnership
Amid regional tensions in the Indo-Pacific, Seoul is bolstering its military capabilities with support from Washington.
In November, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced the sale of equipment and services to South Korea to upgrade its fleet of F-15K fighter jets.
The $6.2 billion package covers system upgrades, aerial refueling capabilities, advanced radars with Active Electronically Scanned Arrays, missile-warning systems, maintenance, software assistance, and training.
Earlier that month, the US approved additional military support for its East Asian ally, including four E-7 Airborne Early Warning & Control aircraft and 10 jet engines, with an estimated budget of $4.92 billion.
In August, Washington disclosed a $3.5 billion agreement to supply South Korea with up to 36 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, missiles, and related equipment.
