The US State Department has approved a possible $1.17 billion sale of MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopter equipment and support to India.

The South Asian giant has requested 30 Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems in addition to advanced data transfer systems, external fuel tanks, and AN/AAS 44C(V) forward looking infrared systems.

Also included in the package are an operator machine interface assistant, spare containers, facilities study, design, construction and support, munitions, spare and repair parts, and personnel training and training equipment.

Various equipment for communication and testing, and related support were also requested, including Joint Mission Planning System and Identification Friend or Foe equipment.

New York-based Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems will be the principal contractor.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency highlighted how the proposed foreign military sale will improve the country’s capability “to deter current and future threats by upgrading anti-submarine warfare capabilities.”

Once delivered, the package will be utilized by the Indian Navy’s aircraft squadron commissioned in March following a $2.6-billion purchase of 24 MH-60R choppers from 2019.

The complete fleet is expected by 2025 to replace the country’s aging Sea King helicopters and enhance India’s security against threats in the Indian Ocean, including piracy and China’s growing presence in the region.
