A US firm, Energy America, has announced plans to develop a 100 MWp solar power plant paired with a 250 megawatt hours (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) in Uganda.

The firm made this known in an official statement on Monday, adding that the project will be located in Kapeeka Sub County, Nakaseke District.

According to the statement, the development is authorized through a Gazetted Policy Direction, marking the launch of Phase I of Uganda’s ambitious plan.

Energy America is a US based solar panel manufacturer and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor with operations in Uganda, Kenya and other African countries.

The strategic policy alignment

On her part, Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, explained that this partnership will leverage advanced clean energy.

“This Policy Direction represents a bold step toward realising our Vision 2040 and achieving the goals of the National Energy Policy 2023.

“By partnering with Energy America and EA Astrovolt, Uganda will harness world-class clean energy technology, foster local employment and skills development, and accelerate our transition to a modern and resilient electricity system,” said Ruth

In addition, Ssentamu said the project’s integration of high-efficiency solar modules and modular BESS, designed for tropical climates, will ensure grid stabilization.

She added that it will also enable off-peak power delivery, as detailed by Energy America.

Project execution and regional impact

EA Astrovolt, Energy America’s East African subsidiary, will lead project development and execution.

The company will conduct a feasibility study, after which the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) will set the tariff, as noted by Energy America, followed by negotiations for a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL).

The project’s infrastructure, including advanced solar modules and scalable battery systems developed by Energy America, is engineered for grid stabilisation, off-peak power delivery, and resilience to extreme environmental conditions.

“This is a model of bilateral cooperation in action, American innovation meeting Ugandan ambition. EA Astrovolt is proud to manage this transformative project and align it with Uganda’s energy sovereignty goals,” said Zoheb Khan, President, EA Astrovolt Africa.

This 100-MWp solar project positions Uganda as a leader in East Africa’s renewable energy transition.

The project is supported by financing from EXIM Bank and the International Development Finance Corporation, strengthening energy cooperation between the two countries.

In addition, it sets a precedent for scalable, clean energy solutions across the region, contributing to sustainable development and reduced carbon emissions.
