BAE Systems has signed a deal to produce and deliver additional M109A7 self-propelled howitzers and M992A3 ammunition carriers for the US Army.

Valued at $418 million, the contract’s deliveries are scheduled through 2025.

The number of units to be received has not yet been disclosed.

This update brings the total value of the production contract, signed in 2017, to $2.5 billion. Last year, a $466-million agreement was signed between the two parties as part of the framework.

M109A7 at a Glance

Considered as the primary indirect fire support system for the US Army’s Armored Brigade Combat Teams, the M109A7 utilizes both the older Paladin M109A6’s main armaments and cab structure and newer chassis components for greater survivability in the field.

The howitzer’s updated design allows it to support higher-caliber cannon assemblies, utilizing a 155mm, 39-caliber cannon supported by a .50-caliber M2 machine gun.

Additionally, its aluminum alloy armor allows it to travel at speeds up to 38 miles (61 kilometers) per hour.
