UNFPA, M-Pesa Foundation Partner to Improve Maternal Health

Landmark Partnership Targets Gaps in Health Equity

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the M-Pesa Foundation have launched a major partnership to boost access to maternal and newborn healthcare in Kenya.

Through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding, the two organizations will work together to strengthen health systems, expand skilled birth attendance, and scale up digital health solutions. The initiative will also focus on preventing and treating obstetric fistula.

This collaboration comes at a time when maternal and newborn mortality remains a pressing concern. Kenya records 355 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births and 21 neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births. These high numbers stem largely from limited access to quality care, especially in arid and semi-arid areas and informal settlements.

Innovation and Collaboration at the Core

UNFPA Kenya Representative Mr. Anders Thomsen welcomed the partnership, calling it a game-changer. “The M-Pesa Foundation brings innovation and wide network coverage. Together, we will address inequalities and make sure no mother or child is left behind,” he said.

M-Pesa Foundation Chairman Mr. Nicholas Ng’ang’a echoed this sentiment. “Our purpose is to transform lives in the communities we serve. This partnership gives us a chance to invest in solutions that directly improve outcomes for women and children.”

The two organizations plan to jointly advocate for policy reforms, boost community engagement in healthcare delivery, and introduce innovative funding models, including private sector partnerships.

By blending UNFPA’s technical know-how with M-Pesa Foundation’s digital innovation, this alliance promises to deliver long-term impact. It moves Kenya closer to a future where quality maternal and newborn care is accessible to all—not just the privileged few.
