Rolls-Royce has signed a five-year contract with the UK to maintain and service the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon aircraft.

The company will establish the Typhoon Engine Support Solution (TESS), a team that will provide maintenance and repair for the jets’ EJ200 engines.

About 130 engines will be serviced in Rolls-Royce’s UK Defence headquarters in Bristol. An estimated 200 direct jobs will be supported throughout the process, with 2,400 jobs across the UK bolstered by the project’s supply chain.

TESS will also sustain vital skills to enable the air force to bridge to future capabilities like the Global Combat Air Programme.

“This contract builds on more than a century of Rolls-Royce partnership and trust with the Ministry of Defence,” Rolls-Royce Defence President Adam Riddle shared.

“The Typhoon Engine Support Solution represents a continuation of our support of the EJ200 engine and we’re glad for the ongoing confidence in our team and capabilities.”

A Long-Standing Partnership

The UK and Rolls-Royce have partnered in multiple army programs focused on updating existing capabilities and manufacturing new equipment.

In January, the company signed an $11-billion deal to provide nuclear reactors for the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet.

The contract is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs and safeguard 4,000 more.

Rolls-Royce’s Mission Bay Handling System (MBHS) was also chosen in 2024 as one of the capabilities onboard the navy’s Type 26 City-class frigates.

The MBHS will be used to move containerized mission modules on the ships, eliminating the need for dockside cranes.
