The UK government has dismissed claims of a rift with Mauritius over a deal to transfer control of the Chagos Islands while retaining the UK-US military base on Diego Garcia for a 99-year lease. The agreement, signed in October with the previous Mauritian administration, is now under review by new Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. Addressing Mauritius’ parliament, Ramgoolam stated that the deal does not sufficiently benefit the nation and that counter-proposals have been submitted to the UK. The UK maintains that the agreement ensures the base’s secure operation, crucial for international security, amid legal challenges over sovereignty. Critics in the UK’s Conservative Party argue the deal surrenders sovereignty, potentially increasing China’s influence. Meanwhile, the Biden administration supports the agreement, though concerns persist about potential opposition from Donald Trump and his allies in the US.
