According to the preliminary 2024 national census results released by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (Ubos) on Thursday, as seen in the East African publication, Uganda now boasts a population of 45.9 million people, a far cry from 34.6 million counted in 2014.

The data for the country’s first digital census, the sixth one since it gained independence was acquired using around 160 household questions and more than 60 questions in a communal questionnaire.

According to Ubos Executive Director Chris Mukiza, refugees documented in Uganda on census night (May 9) made up at least 780, 061 of the country’s current population estimate.

The largest of the traditional kingdoms in present-day East Africa; Buganda accounts for most of the country’s population while the Karamoja region presents the fewest individuals.

“Uganda is a young country with 50.5 percent of the population aged below 17, while age group 18-30 (youths) form 22.7 percent of the count,” according to a population pyramid released by Ubus.

Women constitute 23.4 million of Uganda’s population, which denotes that they have continuously outnumbered males in the last 2 decades.

“At birth demographically, there are more males born than baby girls. It is estimated that there are 105 males born, but in life, more males die due to biological social, and environmental issues,” ICT Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi stated.
