Kampala is looking to negotiate a nuclear deal with Russia, aiming to build a nuclear power plant to address the country’s growing energy demands. Foreign Minister Abubaker Jeje Odongo made this revelation to the Russian newspaper Sputnik during a recent interview. The discussions align with Russia’s recent push to expand its energy influence in Africa, with similar deals having been struck with Congo, Guinea, and Algeria. Prior to Odongo’s revelation, Uganda’s Minister of Energy, Okaasai Sidronius Opolot, revealed that Ugandan authorities were working to identify a suitable site for a nuclear power plant, with attention to uranium deposits. Uganda’s interest highlights Africa’s focus on energy-driven industrialization, reflecting a broader trend across the continent, with nations considering nuclear energy partnerships with Russia over Western alternatives.
