Ugandan forensic experts have released a report detailing the origin and impact of space debris that fell across western Uganda in May 2023. The debris, traced to SpaceX, damaged property in Kyegegwa, Sembabule, and Kyenjojo districts, spanning a 40-kilometer radius. The report, by Uganda’s National Forensic Sciences University and the Airforce, identified the fragments as “military-grade equipment” made from durable materials that survived re-entry. Although no injuries occurred, the incident raised concerns over the safety and accountability of falling space debris. Kampala had until May 2024 to seek legal recourse under the UN Outer Space Treaty, which holds launching nations liable for damages caused by their space objects. Ultimately, the East African country did not pursue that course of action. The case highlights the growing risks linked to the crowded low Earth orbit, exacerbated by the increase in private space launches.
