Speaking at a Consular Media Day event held on Friday, 9 May 2025, Consular General Elliot Fertik reiterated the Embassy’s commitment to fostering a transparent and user-friendly visa process for Ghanaians.

“We continue to welcome visitors from Ghana who are interested in studying, investing, or conducting business in the U.S. Last year, we issued 25,000 visas to Ghanaians. However, it is important to understand that individuals entering the U.S. must comply with our laws,” Fertik stated.

High denial rate linked to application gaps

While the Embassy did not provide specific reasons for the relatively high visa refusal rate, such outcomes are commonly linked to issues such as incomplete applications, ineligibility, or concerns over possible immigrant intent.

“We want to ensure that Ghanaians are well informed about the visa application process and understand exactly what is expected of them,” Fertik emphasised.

Firm position on illegal immigration

The Consular General also underscored the U.S. government’s strict stance on illegal immigration.

“The U.S. has zero tolerance for illegal immigration. Those who break the rules will face consequences, including visa denial or a ban from entering the country,” he warned.

Efforts to enhance transparency and customer service

Fertik further noted that the Embassy is continuously refining its services to provide a more efficient and transparent experience for applicants.

“We have implemented several measures to improve the overall experience for visa applicants. The Department of State’s highest priority remains the safety of U.S. citizens abroad and supporting those who require assistance while overseas,” he added.
