Researchers from the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science have unveiled an innovative, sustainable method for managing electronic waste and advancing data processing: repurposing outdated smartphones into miniature data centers.

Over 1.2 billion smartphones are produced annually and are often discarded within a few years. This solution provides a practical and low-cost alternative to landfills and energy-intensive recycling.

By removing the original batteries and integrating external power sources, the researchers minimized environmental risks while enabling continuous operation. The prototype, built from four connected phones in 3D-printed casings, was tested in various conditions, including under water, where it autonomously collected and processed marine life data.

Each converted phone costs roughly EUR 8, making this an accessible and scalable model for smart city infrastructure and environmental monitoring. Beyond reducing electronic waste, the project highlights the untapped potential of older devices in supporting sustainable, decentralized data processing networks.
