Turkish defense contractor Otokar has announced the opening of its subsidiary in Romania to support military vehicle production for the Balkan government.
The hub’s introduction followed the Sakarya-based firm’s acceptance of an approximately $930-million contract to manufacture its flagship Cobra II armored tactical vehicle for the Romanian Land Forces.
Signed in October 2024, the deal covers 1,059 of the 4-wheel drive platforms in its base model and eight variants.
The terms of this agreement stipulate the production of 278 Cobras in Turkey and the remainder in Romanian territories in partnership with Bucharest-based automotive company Romtehnica.
“The company will carry out local activities and provide added value in Romania,” Romanian media outlet Economedia reported, citing Otokar’s comment on its latest milestone.
The Cobra II Vehicle
Otokar’s Cobra II system weighs 14,500 kilograms (31,967 pounds) and measures 6 meters (20 feet) long.
It features seating for up to 11 personnel, larger cargo load capacity, and enhanced anti-explosive and splinter armor.
The system is powered by a six-speed automatic transmission and a 360-horsepower diesel engine for a top speed of 110 kilometers (68 miles) per hour and a range of 700 kilometers (435 miles).
Users can arm the platform with 7.62 or 12.7-millimeter machine guns as well as an automatic cannon.
