President Donald Trump said Friday the United States should not be required to meet a NATO target of spending five percent of the country’s gross domestic product on defense.

“I don’t think we should, but I think they should,” he said of fellow members of the alliance.

“We’ve been supporting NATO so long, in many cases, I believe, paying almost 100 percent the cost. So I don’t think we should, but I think that the NATO countries should, absolutely.”
