The Lagos State Government has declared a temporary halt to the operations of the Marine Bridge located in Ijora, within the Apapa Local Government Area, to facilitate essential maintenance work orchestrated by the Federal Ministry of Works.
In an announcement made on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, revealed that the bridge will be inaccessible for a duration of 15 days, starting from Saturday, October 11, and is set to reopen on Saturday, October 25, 2025.
Osiyemi detailed that the maintenance endeavor will unfold in two phases designed to diminish the impact on traffic flow and ensure an efficient diversion of vehicles throughout the maintenance period.
Phase I is scheduled from October 11 to 18, impacting the segment from the base of the Marine Bridge at Lawani Oguntayo Road (near UBA, heading toward Apapa/Costain).
During this timeframe, drivers traveling from Ijora Olopa towards Apapa will be rerouted via the Ijora Causeway Access Ramp, alongside Omni Retail Company, leading to Ijora 7up, before veering left to Lilypond Access Ramp to continue their journey.
Phase II, planned for October 19 to 25, will encompass the expanse between Ijora Badia and Lilypond Access Ramp (heading toward Apapa).
In this segment, motorists from Ijora Olopa intending to reach Apapa and Costain will be directed roughly 50 meters prior to the work zone into a contraflow lane alongside Costain-bound traffic for approximately 500 meters before integrating back into the primary carriageway.
Additionally, vehicles making their way from Apapa toward Costain, Lagos Island, or Ijora Olopa will continue to benefit from uninterrupted traffic; however, they will temporarily share a contraflow stretch of about 500 meters around the construction site.
Osiyemi urged road users to exhibit patience and collaborate with the traffic management personnel, emphasizing that this temporary closure is crucial for the replacement of the bridge’s foundational bearings, which are vital to its structural robustness and safety.
He reassured that sufficient traffic officers will be deployed along the diversion routes to oversee vehicle movement and mitigate congestion.
“The temporary closure is pivotal for the enduring safety and resilience of the Marine Bridge. This initiative reflects the ongoing partnership between the Lagos State and Federal Governments to improve infrastructure and guarantee safer roads for everyone,” Osiyemi asserted.
