For instance, in mid-2024, South Africa topped the charts with the highest crime index on the continent, scoring 74.8. Shockingly, six out of the top ten cities with the highest crime rates are in South Africa.

Nigeria, the continent’s most populous nation, follows with a crime index of 66.7, and Angola isn’t far behind with a score of 66.1.

On the flip side, some cities have made impressive progress in creating secure environments despite facing similar challenges.

For example, Tunis and Cairo have been recognised as cities with high safety indexes. According to a report by Numbeo, both cities have an index of 51.9 and 49.3 respectively.
