Africa’s internet scene is buzzing like never before. Over the past few years, mobile networks, fibre optics, and tech hubs have started transforming how people connect, work, and play across the continent.

From streaming your favourite shows to running businesses online, reliable internet is becoming less of a luxury and more of a daily necessity. But not all countries are moving at the same pace. Some nations are sprinting ahead, while others are still trying to catch up.

According to the Speedtest Global Index, Morocco is leading the pack in Africa, claiming the top spot for mobile internet speed at an impressive 123.87 Mbps. That’s faster than a lot of places in the world! Its fixed broadband is also strong, making Morocco a hub for digital innovation, startups, and online services.

1. Morocco (123.87 Mbps)

Morocco leads Africa in mobile internet speed, with an impressive 123.87 Mbps, reflecting major investments in telecom infrastructure and 4G expansion. Its fixed broadband is also strong, ranking 105th globally, with download speeds of 56.27 Mbps and uploads at 53.35 Mbps. Latency is low at 9 ms, indicating efficient connectivity for online gaming and streaming.

2. South Africa (65.70 Mbps)

South Africa ranks 64th globally in mobile internet speed at 65.70 Mbps. Its fixed broadband shows a download speed of 48.34 Mbps and an upload speed of 39.15 Mbps, with very low latency of 7 ms, making it reliable for businesses and remote work.

3. Tunisia

Tunisia

Tunisia offers mobile speeds of 57.30 Mbps, putting it among the fastest in Africa. Fixed broadband, however, lags with downloads of 18.88 Mbps and uploads of 7.32 Mbps, ranking 145th globally. Latency is moderate at 20 ms.

4. Algeria

Algeria shows strong mobile performance at 50.65 Mbps and fixed broadband download speeds of 53.62 Mbps, with uploads at 20.44 Mbps. Its global rank is 109th for fixed broadband, and latency is a low 7 ms.

5. Kenya

Kenya’s mobile internet speed is 45.37 Mbps, with fixed broadband ranking 149th globally. Downloads average 15.70 Mbps and uploads 16.24 Mbps, while latency stands at 10 ms. Kenya has a vibrant mobile-first digital ecosystem, driven by widespread smartphone adoption and mobile money platforms like M-Pesa.
