While the chocolate industry is often associated with major global brands, a significant portion of the world’s cocoa production is rooted in Africa. African countries play a key role in the global chocolate market, with many of them ranking among the top producers and exporters of cocoa beans.

In 2022/2023, Africa produced about 73.4% of the world’s cocoa, with Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana leading the pack, according to a report by Afreximbank. Côte d’Ivoire, in particular, stands out as the world’s largest cocoa producer, contributing nearly half of global production.

This has a direct impact on the chocolate industry, which, in turn, influences local economies by creating jobs and generating income for cocoa farmers. The global chocolate industry was valued at nearly $58 billion in 2022, with expectations that it will reach $81.8 billion by 2030. As the demand for chocolate grows, so does the need for cocoa.

In 2020, African countries saw a notable increase in chocolate product exports, according to Statista. Côte d’Ivoire led the continent, exporting over 51,000 metric tons of chocolate products. Egypt came in second with around 28,000 metric tons, and South Africa rounded out the top three with just under 14,000 metric tons.

However, this booming industry isn’t without its challenges. One of the biggest issues facing African chocolate exports is the unpredictable nature of global market trends. Factors such as shifting consumer tastes, changes in commodity prices, and international trade policies all play a part in how much chocolate is produced and sold.

On top of that, Africa’s cocoa industry is often criticized for the use of child labour and unsustainable farming practices, which not only harm the people involved but also damage the environment.

Despite these challenges, the potential for growth in the African chocolate industry is huge.
