The world today is experiencing a noticeable decline in peace, with Africa being particularly affected.
Various regions across the globe are witnessing escalating conflicts, social unrest, and a general decline in stability. In Africa for instance, factors such as political instability, climate change, widespread poverty, unemployment, and economic inequality are major drivers of unrest.
When populations struggle to meet basic needs, frustrations can boil over into protests and violence. Political turmoil due to disputed elections, authoritarian regimes, and coups also contribute significantly.
A new report by the Global Peace Index for 2024 revealed that the world is at a crossroads, and without concerted effort, there is a risk of a surge in major conflicts.
Globally, there are now 56 conflicts, the highest number since World War II. These conflicts have become increasingly international, with 92 countries involved in disputes beyond their borders—the most since the inception of the Global Peace Index (GPI).
In the first four months of 2024, conflict-related deaths globally amounted to 47,000. If the same rate continues for the rest of this year, it would be the highest number of conflict deaths since the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
In Africa, the report indicates that Sudan is the least peaceful country for 2024, with an overall score of 3.327. Following Mauritius, South Sudan has a score of 3.324, and Democratic Republic of the Congo scores 3.264.
