The G20, which includes the world’s top economies, holds significant economic, political, and diplomatic weight.

When a G20 country wields significant power over numerous African states, the situation is significantly more complicated than simple economic relationships or diplomatic connections.

It represents a complex interplay of historical connections, geopolitical objectives, soft power, and shared economic goals.

Although there has been a note-worth shift in global power dynamics, particularly in West Africa, where Western powers are being rejected, many G20 countries, notably former colonial powers such as the United Kingdom and France, have longstanding ties with African states.

These historical relationships can come with both benefits and drawbacks. On the one hand, shared languages, legal systems, and institutional structures make diplomatic interactions and corporate operations run more smoothly.

On the other hand, as alluded to earlier, past grudges and charges of neocolonialism continue, occasionally straining relationships.

For many G20 countries, Africa is a burgeoning market with prospects in natural resources, agriculture, and a growing customer base.

Countries like China, India, and the United States have made significant investments in African infrastructure, energy, and technology.

Influence in Africa is more than just economics; it is also a strategic geopolitical imperative.

African states have great power in global organizations such as the United States, where they form a sizable voting bloc.

For G20 nations, building strong relationships in Africa assures support for crucial international problems.

Furthermore, Africa’s strategic location, along vital sea routes and rich in natural resources, makes it a hotspot for geopolitical conflict among global powers.

Military cooperation, peacekeeping operations, and defense treaties demonstrate the extent of G20’s influence.

With that said, here are the G20 countries with the highest number of African friends according to a report by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), titled Geopolitical Influence & Peace report.
