With his return to the White House, one of his most fierce policy priorities is a broad crackdown on unauthorized immigration.

His government has stated plans to carry out mass deportations, which may have major economic and political consequences for African countries.

During his 2024 campaign, Trump promised to undertake the “largest deportation operation” in US history, exceeding the efforts of his first term.

His government intends to deport unauthorized immigrants via raids and stronger enforcement methods, and use state and local law enforcement to help with immigration crackdowns.

While much of the U.S. immigration debate revolves around Latin America, African nations also have significant diaspora communities in the U.S.

The number of African migrants in the United States has increased sixteenfold since 1980.

According to the Migration Policy Institute, roughly 2.1 million sub-Saharan African immigrants resided in the United States in 2019, accounting for 5% of the overall foreign-born population of 44.9 million.

With these figures, it is easy to see how Trump’s plan could impact several lives, even those not in the U.S.

One important effect of mass deportations would be the loss of remittances.

Every year, African migrants in the United States send billions of dollars back home to sustain their families, businesses, and infrastructure.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement

According to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, (ICE) Annual Report for 2024, prior to Trump’s inauguration, America boasts a significant amount of removals, at 271,484 in 2024 alone.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) officers execute search warrants on August 7, 2019, as part of a mass roundup of undocumented immigrants in the southeastern US state of Mississippi

“An ICE removal is defined as the compulsory and confirmed movement of an inadmissible or deportable noncitizen out of the United States,” the report states.

“Of the 271,484 removals, 88,763 — or 32.7% — had criminal histories, with an average of 5.63 convictions and/or charges per individual. These included many serious charges or convictions for offenses, including 47,885 assaults; 16,552 sexual assaults and sex offenses; 10,862 weapons offenses; 9,453 burglaries; 4,906 robberies; 2,699 homicides; and 2,423 kidnappings,” the report adds, refrencing removals last year, which was at a four year high.

With that said, here are the African countries with the most deported citizens from the U.S. since Biden became president.
