As global oil prices vary due to wars in critical energy corridors and supply uncertainty, countries that can stabilize or lower local fuel costs gain a significant economic and social cushion.

One of the most immediate consequences of reducing fuel prices is less inflationary pressure. Fuel is an essential input for transportation, industry, and agriculture.

When fuel and diesel prices are low, the cost of carrying products and services remains generally consistent, limiting significant increases in food prices and essential commodities.

In areas where inflation already limits household purchasing power, low-priced fuel can help stabilize the overall cost of living.

Low gasoline prices improve the competitiveness of local industries. Manufacturing organizations, shipping companies, and agricultural producers rely substantially on energy to function.

In many African countries, transportation costs account for a significant amount of everyday spending.

Affordable gasoline reduces transportation costs, allowing workers to commute more affordably and families to allocate more revenue to food, education, and healthcare.

Lower prices directly enhance output and profitability in industries such as agriculture, mining, and logistics that rely on fuel-powered machinery and vehicles.

From a geopolitical standpoint, steady, low gasoline prices can protect economies from global shocks.

Conflicts involving large oil producers or delays in important shipping routes frequently cause abrupt increases in crude oil prices.

Countries that can keep domestic fuel costs relatively low through local refining capacity, strategic reserves, or effective energy management are better positioned to protect their populations from sudden global price changes.

With that said, here are the African countries with the lowest fuel prices in March, per data from Global Petrolprices.

Compared to last month’s list, when the global average fuel price was 1.30 U.S. dollars per liter, as opposed to 1.35 U.S. dollars per liter, fuel prices in Egypt, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Liberia increased.

While fuel prices in Algeria, Tunisia, and Niger have reduced slightly despite the increase in the global average price.

Fuel prices for Libya, Sudan, and Angola remained the same.
