The price of diesel has far-reaching consequences, affecting everything from trucks hauling food and supplies to small companies and farms that use diesel generators.

That’s why when diesel prices fall, even a little, the repercussions may be tremendous, beneficial, and instantaneous.

Lower diesel prices provide much-needed breathing room as African governments strive to stabilize their economies.

They stimulate economic development, lower inflation, and enhance the quality of life for millions.

Right off the bat, it is glaring how much the transportation industry benefits from low diesel costs.

Diesel is the most common fuel used in trucks, buses, and commercial vehicles, particularly for long-distance transport and heavy-duty operations.

When fuel prices fall, transport providers have lower operating expenses, which can translate into cheaper delivery services, more inexpensive public transportation, and lower market prices for commodities.

In many regions of Africa, energy supply is intermittent, forcing many enterprises to rely on diesel-powered generators to stay operational.

Agriculture is the foundation of many African economies, and most of them remain largely reliant on diesel-powered machinery. Tractors, irrigation systems, and post-harvest transportation all require diesel.

Ultimately, diesel is connected to the overall cost of goods and services in some African countries. Lower diesel prices reduce the cost of distribution and manufacturing, hence lowering inflation.

With that said, here are the African countries that have the highest diesel costs currently, according to Global PetrolPrices, which pegs the average price of diesel globally at 1.20 U.S. dollars per liter, as of the 14th of April.

Compared to the top 10 countries that made the list last month, Libya, Nigeria, and Liberia all saw a slight reduction in diesel price.

Diesel prices for Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Tunisia, Ethiopia, and Gabon all saw an increase in diesel prices this month compared to March.

Sudan is the only nation where diesel prices have stayed unchanged.
