Beer production is a cornerstone of global economic and cultural activity, weaving its influence through traditions, modern commerce, and social gatherings.
In 2023, global beer production declined slightly to 1.88 billion hectoliters, a 1% drop compared to previous years. The decrease was largely driven by reductions in major regions such as Europe and North America. While the European Union saw a 2.5% decline due to shrinking production in countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland, North America experienced a 2.7% reduction.
The beer industry in Africa has experienced remarkable growth, underpinned by social and economic shifts. Urbanization, rising disposable incomes, and a youthful population, where over 60% of people are under 25, have driven beer consumption to new heights. Younger generations are increasingly embracing beer as a social and cultural beverage, creating an expanding consumer base that presents opportunities for brewers across the continent.
Despite its rapid growth, Africa’s beer industry faces notable challenges. Rising production costs, driven by inflation and currency devaluation, have squeezed profit margins for brewers. High import duties on brewing equipment and raw materials further compound the financial strain, particularly for smaller breweries that lack the resources of larger corporations.
According to a recent BarthHass report, countries like São Tomé and Príncipe, Cape Verde, and Guinea-Bissau recorded the lowest beer production figures in Africa. São Tomé and Príncipe ranked 169th globally, producing just 10,000 hectoliters, while Cape Verde followed with 12,000 hectoliters, placing it 167th. Guinea-Bissau, slightly ahead, produced 45,000 hectoliters, ranking 100th globally.
