Libya, despite enduring political instability, holds the largest oil reserves in Africa, with 48.36 billion barrels, ranking 9th globally according to Global Firepower. Known for its high-quality, low-sulfur crude, Libya’s oil is in high demand on international markets.

Oil has long been a cornerstone of many African economies, with several countries on the continent boasting significant proven oil reserves. These reserves not only fuel domestic industries but also play a critical role in Africa’s position in the global energy market.

From North Africa to sub-Saharan Africa, oil extraction has become a major economic driver, attracting both foreign investments and creating jobs while contributing to government revenues.

One of Africa’s most notable oil-producing regions is North Africa where countries like Libya and Algeria are among the continent’s largest oil producers.

Libya, despite enduring political instability, holds the largest oil reserves in Africa, with 48.36 billion barrels, ranking 9th globally according to Global Firepower. Known for its high-quality, low-sulfur crude, Libya’s oil is in high demand on international markets.

Similarly, Algeria, a key exporter of both oil and gas, has substantial reserves of 12.2 billion barrels, ranking 15th globally. These reserves play a significant role in Algeria’s economy, although recent years have seen a decline in production levels.

In West Africa, Nigeria and Angola are among the continent’s largest oil producers. Nigeria, with proven reserves of 36.89 billion barrels, ranks 11th globally, making it the second-largest oil reserve holder in Africa.

Angola follows closely with 7.78 billion barrels, securing the fourth spot in Africa’s oil reserves.
