Natural gas could be Africa’s big break when it comes to solving its energy problems and boosting economies. The continent is sitting on a goldmine, over 17.89 trillion standard cubic meters of natural gas as of 2023.

Nigeria housed the largest reserves in the continent, around 5.94 trillion standard cubic meters, equivalent to roughly three per cent of the proven global natural gas reserves.

North Africa isn’t far behind, with Algeria alone packing around 4.5 trillion cubic meters. With global demand for natural gas on the rise, Africa’s reserves could soon play a much bigger role in the global energy game.

According to Statista, Africa’s natural gas reserves are estimated to last another 55.7 years at the current production rate. In 2023, the continent pumped out 253 billion cubic meters of natural gas, a whopping 87% increase since 2000.

Algeria is leading the charge as Africa’s top producer, followed by Egypt and Nigeria. Unsurprisingly, these countries are also the biggest exporters, sending their gas to international markets.

Below are the top 10 African countries with the largest natural gas reserves:

Africa exported over 109.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2023, with Algeria, Egypt, and Nigeria topping the list. Europe is the biggest buyer, taking in 60% of Africa’s gas exports back in 2019.

Northern African countries like Algeria benefit from their proximity to Europe, sending most of their exports to places like Italy and Spain. But while the potential is huge, challenges like outdated infrastructure and stagnant production could slow things down.

Africa has the reserves, the demand is growing, and the opportunities are there, it’s just a matter of whether the continent can fully capitalize on its natural gas wealth.
