A high GNI per capita is essential to the growth and prosperity of African countries. Reduced poverty, higher living standards, better healthcare and education, social development, and sustainable growth are all results high income earning as a measure of GNI per capita. It takes coordinated efforts from governments, the corporate sector, and foreign partners to achieve and sustain a high GNI per capita.

According to a World Bank report titled World Development Report 2024, “Economic Growth in Middle-Income Countries will explore the challenges of economic growth in middle-income countries. Using the World Bank’s income classification, the world currently comprises 26 low-income, 108 middle-income, and 83 high-income economies.”

Gross National Income (GNI) per capita is an important economic indicator that reflects the average income of a country’s residents. It is calculated using the total national income divided by the population.

A high GNI per capita typically suggests that a country’s economy is operating well and its residents are earning more money. This correlates directly with lower levels of poverty. Individuals and families with greater money may afford better housing, nutrition, healthcare, and education, all of which are essential for breaking the poverty cycle.

Additionally, a high GNP per capita promotes broader social development objectives. It enables the execution of social welfare programs, infrastructure development, and the delivery of basic services to all residents. This helps to create a more inclusive society in which everyone has the opportunity to prosper.

There are numerous benefits to having a country bring in a high income. While this is typically linked to the top economies in the world, there are some African countries with a very impressive GNI, rivaling European countries, and below are the top 10 of them.
