While some African nations manage to maintain low fuel costs, others face persistent challenges that lead to higher energy prices

One such factor is when natural resources are limited. Countries with little or no oil reserves rely heavily on imports, exposing them to global market fluctuations and high logistics costs.

Another reason why fuel often spikes is the initiative of the government.

Adminstrative decisions in the energy sector is important in determining fuel costs. This can take the form of policies implemented, such as the removal of subsidies.

Furthermore, an insufficient refining capacity affects the price of fuel, as is evident in Nigeria, which is one of the continent’s largest oil-producing nations, with a very sub-par refining infrastructure save the Dangote refinery.

Other factors such as inflation, currency devaluation, and political uncertainty also exacerbate fuel price hikes.

According to GlobalPetrolPrices.com, the ten African countries below have the most expensive fuel prices as of the 9th of December 2024.

The current global fuel price average is 1.24 U.S. Dollar per liter, the exact same amount reported in November.

Fuel prices in December for the Central Africa Republic, Senegal, Zimbabwe, and Ivory Coast, all experienced a slight decline from last month.

While the prices for Malawi, Mauritius, and Guinea all increased marginally.

Prices for Kenya and Sierra Leone, in line with the global fuel price averages between November and December, stayed the same.

Seychelles was ousted from the list this month by Burundi.
