One of the most apparent implications of high fuel prices is a significant rise in transportation and logistics costs.

Because trucks and long-haul vehicles mostly operate on diesel, rising prices imply increasing expenses for transporting commodities across cities, regions, and countries.

This, in turn, raises the cost of necessary items, particularly food, medication, and building materials, putting further burden on households already struggling to keep up with growing living costs.

Additionally, high diesel costs hurt businesses, especially small and medium-sized firms (SMEs). With an unstable energy supply still a major issue, many companies rely on diesel generators to function.

High fuel prices increase operational expenses, lower profit margins, and, in certain situations, necessitate closures or layoffs. This causes enormous economic consequences on a continent where SMEs account for the vast bulk of jobs.

High fuel costs in Africa are more than simply a nuisance; they are a systemic issue affecting food security, public health, company survival, and economic growth.

To reduce the repercussions, nations must consider long-term remedies such as increasing refining capacity, stabilizing currencies, supporting greener energy sources, and devising clever, targeted subsidies.

Until then, rising diesel prices would continue to impede Africa’s economic growth.

With that said, here are the African countries currently enduring the highest diesel costs according to GlobalPetrolPrices, which last updated its list on the 9th of June 2025, when the average price of diesel around the world was listed as $1.18.

Compared to the top 10 list last month, diesel prices for the Central African Republic, Malawi, Cameroon, and Senegal all increased slightly.

While diesel prices in Zimbabwe, Seychelles, Mozambique, Guinea, and Burundi, this month, compared to May, have reduced marginally.

The price in Sierra Leone remained the same.
