Crime, ranging from petty thefts to organized crime syndicates, has far-reaching effects on countries. In mid-2024, South Africa recorded the highest crime index in Africa.
From minor thefts to big-time crime rings, the effects of criminal activity spread far and wide. Crime not only undermines social order but also hinders economic development, disrupts peace, and erodes public trust in governance and legal institutions.
However, how common crime is and what types of crimes happen can vary a lot depending on where you are. Some countries in Africa for instance, face several unique challenges that complicate the issue.
In an earlier article, where we revealed the top 10 African cities with the highest crime index in mid-2024, we argued that although the continent has a thriving young population, this demographic advantage is often overshadowed by socio-economic challenges such as unemployment, inflation, and high living costs.
These issues, coupled with poverty and economic inequality, create conditions where individuals may turn to illicit activities as a means of survival.
An updated crime index by Numbeo reveals that, based on country, South Africa has the highest crime index mid-2024 with a score of 74.8.
It’s not surprising considering that six out of the top 10 cities with the highest crime index in mid-2024 are in the country.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, follows as the country with the highest crime on the continent with a score of 66.7. Angola comes in third with a score of 66.1.
