On January 20, 2025, shortly after his inauguration, Donald Trump halted funding from USAID, a key source of aid for Africa. Considering the United States is one of the world’s largest aid providers, this decision raises critical questions about the future of U.S. support, particularly for some African countries.

The sudden cessation of USAID funding by former U.S. President Donald Trump has sent shockwaves through essential sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and education. These areas heavily depend on foreign aid, and concerns are mounting about the potential collapse of critical services.

Interestingly, despite the suspension of USAID programs, the United States remains committed to funding many African countries, according to data from the U.S. Foreign Assistance website.

Several African nations rely heavily on U.S. aid to combat diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis.

Organizations dedicated to vaccination efforts and maternal health services have voiced alarm over the impending financial shortfall.

In regions like Sudan and Somalia, where USAID has played a pivotal role in managing public health emergencies, the funding gap could lead to increased health risks and overwhelmed healthcare facilities.

Despite the broad freeze on USAID funding, data from the U.S. Foreign Assistance website reflects ongoing financial commitments to most African countries through other channels.

Departments such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Federal Trade Commission, among others, continue to provide funding.

With that context, here are the African countries set to receive the least U.S. funding in 2025, in light of the suspension of USAID support, as per the US Foriegn Assistance website.
