From day one of his second term, President Trump moved quickly, signing executive orders that included halting U.S. foreign development aid to several countries.

For years, this aid has been a lifeline, driving progress in healthcare, education, and agriculture. But with the sudden freeze, concerns are growing, especially in African nations that rely heavily on U.S. support.

One of the hardest-hit sectors is agriculture, the backbone of Africa’s economy. It employs over 60% of the continent’s population and plays a huge role in food security, poverty reduction, and economic growth.

Yet, despite its importance, agriculture in Africa faces major challenges, climate change, limited access to credit, outdated technology, and poor infrastructure.

To help tackle these issues, the United States has been a key supporter of agricultural development in Africa, mainly through USAID. Programs like Feed the Future, launched in 2010, have helped millions of smallholder farmers boost crop yields, increase incomes, and access better markets.

Another initiative, Food for Peace, has provided emergency food aid in times of crisis and supported long-term agricultural development. Some countries have benefited significantly from this support.

In 2024, Niger received the most U.S. agricultural aid, with $65.94 million, followed by Ethiopia at $63.14 million. Ethiopia, frequently battling drought and food insecurity, has used these funds to improve irrigation, support farmers, and strengthen food production.
