Africa is a continent abundant in natural resources, and natural gas is one of said precious assets.

Natural gas reserves in several African countries have the potential to transform the continent’s energy industry, stimulate economic growth, and raise living standards.

Despite its richness, Africa’s natural gas consumption remains low in comparison to its potential, owing mostly to infrastructural inadequacies and policy problems.

However, increased natural gas usage in Africa is critical for a variety of reasons.

Africa has huge energy shortfalls, with millions of people without access to dependable electricity.

Natural gas can be a reliable and greener alternative to coal and diesel, which presently dominate Africa’s energy mix.

Increased natural gas use will aid in the reduction of energy poverty, the development of power industries, and rural electrification.

As the globe moves toward greener energy sources, natural gas serves as a bridge between fossil fuels and renewable energy.

It emits substantially less carbon than coal and oil, making it an excellent alternative for African countries looking to achieve global climate obligations while still promoting economic development.

Many African countries rely significantly on imported petroleum supplies, which strains foreign reserves and exposes economies to global oil price volatility.

Egypt resorts to gas import as natural gas output plummets

Countries that use indigenous natural gas reserves can lessen their reliance on imports, stabilize energy costs, and boost their economies.

Furthermore, natural gas infrastructure development, such as pipelines and LNG terminals, has the potential to enhance regional energy trading.

With that said, below are the African countries with the highest consumption of natural gas in 2025, according to data from Global Firepower, an online portal that provides analytic data concerning global military power.
