Thousands of Mombasa residents gathered at the Mombasa Sports Club on Saturday for the first-ever M-PESA Sokoni Festival. The event was part of the M-PESA @ 18 celebrations and featured exciting product deals, entertainment, and giveaways.
Customers received shopping vouchers, branded merchandise, electronics, and cash prizes. The vibrant market-style setup brought together local and national merchants offering discounts on smartphones, electronics, household items, beauty products, travel packages, and more.
“It has been an amazing week interacting with our customers in this region, as we appreciate them for walking with us for the last 18 years,” said Safaricom’s Chief Financial Services Officer, Esther Waititu. “Our customers came out in large numbers with their families to shop and enjoy the incredible offers. They also got to enjoy electrifying performances by DJs and artists.”

Big Wins and Deeper Impact for the Community
The crowd enjoyed the interactive “M-PESA or the Box” game show, where lucky participants walked away with electronics, vouchers, and cash. Elizabeth Makokha from Changamwe won the grand prize of KES 180,000.
“I didn’t expect to win. I came to enjoy the festival and celebrate M-PESA’s 18 years. I’ll use this money to grow my shoe business,” she said.
The weeklong celebration included a caravan tour across coastal towns and market activations that rewarded participants with gifts and prizes. The Safire Connect forum also took place, giving entrepreneurs and community leaders a space to discuss personal branding, business, and financial wellness.
