EACHRights Executive Director Gilbert Onyango says “The Universal Periodic Review—is a global human rights check-up!  (UPR) is a process where the United Nations checks how well each country is protecting human rights. It’s all about holding governments accountable and pushing for change. In Kenya, it’s our chance to demand action on crucial issues like the Right to Food and food security. Let’s keep our leaders in check”

RTF Coalition  National Coordinator, Njeri Karanu  says “In the Right to Food UPR Report, agriculture makes up 20% of our GDP employing 40% of people, but funding has dropped from KES 87B to KES 71.61B, far below the target of 10%. Mbegu imekua expensive na farmers hawapati support poa”

While presenting the much awaited report on the Right to Food, Dr. Elizabeth Kimani of APHCR shed light on Kenya’s current standing.

Key highlights included the impact of austerity measures on food access, the rising cost of living, and the growing challenge of malnutrition.

The report emphasizes the need for urgent solutions to ensure every Kenyan’s right to adequate and nutritious food.

Prof. Nicholas Orago  of Maseno University spoke on the growing challenges to the Right to Food in Kenya. A key takeaway was the need to preserve our ecosystem and improve our national capacity to produce food.

The report recommends the following;
The government should fasttrack the transition to agroecology by finalizing and implementing the National Agroecology Strategy for Food Systems Transformation.

It should promote and incentivize the production and consumption of diverse indigenous food sources such as millet, yams potatoes etc.

The government should develop a national implementation Plan to protect the right to food  for peasants.

The government should fully devolve agricultural sector functions and resources and recommit to the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme.

The government should “repurpose” national agriculture support systems from production focused and move to towards more sustainable and equitable practices informed by the local context and priorities of vulnerable groups.

The government should review and update the National guidelines for Healthy diets and Physical activity to align with the WHO and UNICEF Infant and Young Child Feeding Guidelines of 2021.

While speaking at the launch of the Right to Food UPR Report, TISA Executive Director Diana Gichengo spoke to the challenges facing smallholder farmers. “While MPs rejected the Mung Bill that would have imposed a levy on mung beans (ndengu), the seeds and plants varieties Act still restricts farmers from sharing uncertified seeds, keeping them at the mercy of corporations. Farmers are frustrated, and it’s time to demand laws that truly empower them. The fight for seed freedom and food security continues”
