The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, clarified the proposed increase in telecommunications tariffs, emphasizing that any hike should be contained within a range of 30% to 60%.
Tijani underscored the critical importance of the telecom sector to Nigeria’s economy. He highlighted that the industry is not only a major driver of economic growth but also a significant contributor to the nation’s GDP, accounting for an impressive 14% to 16%.
Tijani further elaborated on the sector’s far-reaching impact on employment in the country. He noted that it directly provides jobs for over 15,000 professionals while indirectly supporting the livelihoods of approximately 500,000 individuals across various sectors. This makes the telecom industry a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic infrastructure, influencing both digital innovation and job creation.
